Algebra I with Applications

For students age 13-18, this introductory algebra course covers the topics included in traditional public and private high school Algebra I programs.  It is enhanced to go beyond traditional programs by combining curricular materials with the extensive STEM education facilities of New England Sci-Tech.

Students in this course learn the techniques of Algebra and how to apply them through labs, projects, and collaboration. This course provides a foundation for future courses – Algebra II, Geometry, Calculus, engineering, and sciences. 

COURSE FEATURES

  • Alternates between hands-on activities at the NEST facility in Natick with Zoom-based classes
  • Online help sessions available
  • Assigned individual and group homework, labs, and projects
  • Taught by a college-level instructor with extensive experience in mathematics, science, and engineering
  • Meets Algebra I requirements for most high school students
Profile - Norman Wittels

Norman Wittels, Instructor


Dr. Wittels received his PhD, Masters of Science, & Bachelors of Science degrees from MIT where he studied electrical engineering, electron optics and experimental physics, as well as mathematics including integral equations, transcendental functions, and higher-dimensional analytic geometry. He has industrial experience at Sperry Research Center, GE, IBM, Automatix Inc., and Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute. He has taught at MIT, WPI, Hunter College High School, Brookline High, and most recently Dexter Southfield School.

  • Runs 14 weeks, February 3 through May 21, 2026(skipping public school vacations)
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:30-11:30 AM, for 27 sessions
  • Feb 3, 5, 10, 12, 24, 26, Mar 3, 5, 10, 12, 17, (no class 3/19), 24, 26, 31, Apr 2, 7, 9, 14, 16, 28, 30, May 5, 7, 12, 14, 19, 21
  • Priced at $30 per 2-hour class for 27 classes, total $810**
  • ** Special pricing for course pilot program – tuition covered by grant; lab fee $85
  • Limited to 8 students (minimum 6)

- Plotting scores and modeling sport trends

- Calculating mortgages and leases
