National Greek Mythology Exam Prep (Also see LATIN EXAM prep)

If you love mythology and are in grades 4-8, you'll love the National Greek Mythology Exam Prep course - an 8-hour mythology course with a focus on preparation for the Pegasus National Greek Mythology Exam.

Most classes are online, but in-person classes can be arranged.

For best chances of scoring high, it is best to take two or more sessions for more hours of material. It is best to start each course at the beginning, but it is possible to jump in late, after a course has begun.

Course sessions are offered in the spring, summer, fall, and winter just before the exam in March.

Classes consist of drill and practice, exam-taking techniques, discussion of major themes, and short videos of the major myths to know. Outside reading from the listed texts is expected.

Pegasus Greek Mythology Exam Focus

The Pegasus National Greek Mythology Exam is a measure of success that looks good on school and college applications and may lead to scholarships. This course will cover all the major concepts that will be on the exam, provide practice material and techniques for scoring high, and help students gain confidence.

The study of mythology allows us to understand our world, global literature, and art while also helping us to make classical connections to contemporary culture.

At the end of this course, students in grades 4-8 will be able to take the national PEGASUS NATIONAL GREEK MYTHOLOGY EXAM in March.

Students in grades 4-8 will take Level 1 (30 General questions).
Students in grades 5-6 will take Level 1 and Level 2 (additional 10 Thematic questions) (total 40 questions).
Students in grades 7-8 will take Levels 1, 2, and 3 (additional 10 Extension questions) (total 50 questions).

System Requirements: For the ONLINE course, computer or Chromebook with a large screen, capable of running ZOOM Meeting, either by Zoom app or through a web browser, a web camera with microphone, and a printer. Most important is a good connection to the Internet. A wired Ethernet connection is best though WiFi will work with a solid signal. Most difficulties with audio and video come from a poor connection to the Internet.

- EXTENSION QUESTIONS ON THEME: ANCIENT BEGINNINGS - 10 questions, required for grades 7-8

The extension questions on the theme have been written to challenge older students to think more deeply about selected myths, and the questions are in the same multiple-choice format as the rest of the test. Teachers are encouraged to explore ways to develop co-curricular units of study to connect the myth to other disciplines, such as English language arts, social studies, and the arts.

Your Mythology Instructor

The instructor, Bob Phinney, has taught classical Latin and Mythology for 43 years and has taught many exam prep classes to hundreds of students.

Bob taught at a private K-12 school in Brookline for 38 years before retiring and starting New England Sci-Tech in 2018. He is a graduate of Harvard where he studied architecture, art, and science. He got a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) certification at Clark, holds a Level II archery certification, has an FCC Amateur Extra radio class license, and is a Volunteer Examiner (VE) for FCC radio license exams. Bob was director of IT at his K-12 school for 23 years, director of a summer science day camp for 21 years, and director of a Maine summer camp for 5 years. Bob’s primary academic subject for 38 years was classical Latin language, but he has also taught photography, algebra, English, chemistry, graphic design, woodworking, electronics, radio license courses, astronomy, model rocketry, and archery.

If completely new to the subject, your student will need to enroll in as many weeks as possible. Someone taking Latin and mythology in school may need less preparation.
